About

A husband, father and friend to many, John taught Special Education in the Revere Public Schools for many years. He was an avid long distance runner and ran the Boston Marathon several times. In fact, Mastronardi once held the Boston Marathon record time for a Revere native. Back on April 16, 1978, while teaching at Revere’s Garfield School, Mastronardi ran Boston’s grueling 26.2 mile course in 2:56.42, setting Revere’s course record.

In the 1980’s John contracted a blood disorder known as myelodysplasia. In early 1994, he underwent a necessary bone marrow transplant. While the transplant was initially successful, John passed away on March 19, 1994 after suffering post-transplant complications. Following his passing, a group of John’s close friends and family members convened and developed the John Mastronardi Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Commencing in 1995, each year the John Mastronardi Memorial Scholarship Fund has awarded a scholarship to a Revere High School graduating senior, who plans to major in Special Education in college and who shares John’s enthusiasm, energy and passion for helping others. Revere High School guidance counselors help the scholarship committee select scholarship recipients who embody the qualities and attributes that John embraced as a teacher. For the first several years, the John Mastronardi Memorial Scholarship was a $1,000.00 award and was later increased to $1,500.00. In June of 2011, the committee again increased the scholarship to what is now $2,500.00 annually.
