17th Annual Scholarship is Awarded

The 17th Annual John Mastronardi Memorial Scholarship was presented on Monday, June 13th, 2011 in the library of the Abraham Lincoln Elementary School. Not only was the scholarship award amount increased this year, but due to extremely generous support and incredible fundraising efforts throughout the year, the Mastronardi Committee also decided to award an additional scholarship in 2011. Revere High School graduates, Marissa Parent and Rebecca Coots, were the two scholarship recipients this year.

Parent and Coots were joined at the award ceremony by their families. The two award winners were presented with plaques and checks for $2,500.00 in honor of their achievements. Both, Sarah Russell (Everett, Mass.) and Bill McLaughlin (Norwood, Pa.), who ran the 2011 Boston Marathon in John’s memory, were in attendance at the June 13th ceremony to present the two scholarship recipients with the money, which they trained for and ran 26.2 miles to raise.

The guidance counselors at Revere High School selected Parent and Coots for the 2011 Mastronardi scholarship, as they feel that the duo exemplifies the passion for education, for which John was known. Parent plans to pursue her undergraduate degree at Framingham State University, while Coots will study at Salem State University this Fall.
